Mauritius: National Sales Exhibition 2017 to promote women entrepreneurship
03.12.2017-Port Louis/ The National Sales Exhibition 2017, aiming to provide a platform for potential women entrepreneurs to showcase their talents and skills and to promote income-generating and entrepreneurial activities of women, was inaugurated on thursday at the Municipal Council of Beau-Bassin/ Rose-hill. The exhibition which will remain open till 3 December 2017, is an initiative of the Social Welfare Division of the Ministry of Gender Equality, Child Development and Family Welfare.
The Acting Prime Minister, Mr Ivan Collendavelloo, the Vice-Prime Minister and Minister of Local Government and Outer Islands, Mrs Fazila Jeewa-Daureeawoo, and the Minister of Gender Equality, Child Development and Family Welfare, Mrs Roubina Jadoo-Jaunbocus, were present on the occasion.
In his address, Acting Prime Minister stated that the SME Bill which was presented in the National Assembly on 21 November 2017 aimsat bringing major institutional reforms that not only reckons the stark realities and imperatives of the SME sector, but also responds to the conditions for a healthy economic and social development of the country. It will provide any person who intends to set up an enterprise with the necessary information and support, he said.
Mrs Fazila Jeewa-Daureeawoo pledged that Government will continue to introduce new measures and schemes that will accelerate the successful development of start-ups and strengthen existing businesses. Government is committed to providing a conducive environment for the sustainable development of this sector and respond to the changing needs of SMEs in a proactive manner, she added.
Minister Jadoo-Jaunbocus lauded the efforts of the women entrepreneurs who worked hard towards making this national exhibition a success. She pointed out that the exhibition is an important platform to showcase Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) products adding that her Ministry will ensure that such platforms are organised on a more frequent basis so as to provide more visibility to their products.
Speaking about innovation, she underlined that it is a driving force for SMEs to create competitiveness, higher productivity, better product development and production processes. To this end, she encouraged SMEs to be creative and adopt innovative practices to keep pace with the ongoing worldwide technological revolution.
An Award of Certificates and Prize Giving Ceremony were also held on the occasion. Prizes were remitted under the Greener and Smarter Social Welfare Centre 2017 and the Kitchen Gardens Competition 2017.
