Mahamat insists on elevated Africa-Russia cooperation

10.03.2018 - Addis Ababa / The longstanding relations between Africa and Russia should be elevated, said Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the African Union Commission.

 Mahamat’s remarks came after he held discussions with the visiting Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where they discussed regional and global issues.

 Mahamat called upon Russia to extend support to African countries, mainly in human resources development.

 Lavrov said Russia will provide support for Africa’s push to have a permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

 The reform at the UNSC should include Africa, Sergey Lavrov, said adding Russia backs Africa’s move to get a permanent seat at the UNSC.

 Russia will provide support for African countries, especially in the areas of education and training, as well as their efforts to find African solutions for African problems, Lavrov added.

 The two officials also discussed an upcoming Africa-Russia business conference.
