ETHIOPIA: New Executive Secretary of UNECA Confers with PM Hailemariam.
08.08.2017-Addis Ababa/ Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn has met with Vera Songwe, the new Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), on thursday, August 04.
During the discussion, the Premier said Ethiopia recognizes the contribution ECA in conducting various researches on Ethiopian economy that can be useful for other African countries.
Hailemaraim also appreciated the efforts ECA, AU and the African Development Bank (AfDB) have been making to reduce poverty in the continent.
The Prime Minister promised to provide support for the new Executive Secretary during her tenure in Ethiopia.
Executive Secretary Vera Songwe said "we talked about Africa’s development at the time when global economic change is taking place and the opportunities ahead of the continent in energy and agriculture, among others.”
Songwe added that the officials discussed about climate change and how Ethiopia has been leading the green economy endeavor of the continent.
Furthermore, she stated that the two sides have exchanged views on ways of making Africa a middle income continent.
According to the Executive Secretary, ECA has the privilege to be working with the government of Ethiopia on economic transformation agenda, industrialization as well as resource mobilization.
"We are looking forward at working with the government of Ethiopia on how to accelerate growth and ensure Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”, she said.
Vera Songwe was appointed early this year by United Nations Secretary General, António Guterres, and takes over from former Executive Secretary Carlos Lopes.
